How to Buy Vintage and Modern Sewing Patterns

::::::30 1/2 >>> 77.5cm

::::::31 >>> 78.5

::::::31.5 >>> 80

::::::32 >>> 81

::::::33 >>> 84

::::::34 >>> 86

::::::35 >>> 89

::::::36 >>> 91

今ではeBay(14000アイテム)よりEtsy(80000アイテム)の方がヴィンテージ型紙の数は多いです。

Vintage Wrap Dress I Sewed

I sewed my wrap dress - Two-Way Wrap Dress - using Vintage McCall's 8846 pattern published in 1963.

Vintage McCall's 8846

One way is like this, putting the side edge in front.

The other way to wear is to place the side edge on the back like this.

Vintage McCall's 8846

The dress on the floor! As seen, this is just a fabric with 3 armholes! I sewed it in a day.

There is no dart, zipper, or buttons.

The edge and armholes were trimmed with bias tape which I made on my own years ago. When I found this unknown material at Nippori Fabric Town in Tokyo, I thought it would be good to make one of vintage pattern collections. It costed around 300 yen per meter. Does it look like a bath mat? Maybe the fabric was for rugs! Haha!

When I first got a set of bias tape makers years ago, I was so excited to make bias fold tapes and actually made a lot. I thought this fabric should match my yellow bias tape (which also used for my Kimono Bag) and that the reason I bought this fabric. Sometimes I go opposite way of thinking..... First I choose the embellishment and next, the fabric. Believe me that this gives me more free mind to choose designs and materials. Likewise, I choose Bag first to decide what I wear sometimes.

Above is a closer photo of my dress fabric. You can see the loops like a towel. This loops help the dress edge keeping in touch on the body part but you can use any suggested materials on the pattern envelope.

Here is the pattern I used.

Hope you like my dress!

Vintage Sewing Pattern: Butterick 4699 Two-Way Wrap Dress

Printed in 1968. What an interesting pattern to sew! Basically the dress is just a sheet of fabric with 3 armholes. There is no darts at all. When I found this pattern, I couldn't resist adding it into my collections. Well, I have to admit that I really like unusual, some sort of strange patterns.

Review of this vintage pattern

- Extremely simple to sew.

- Long binding was a bit boring to sew.

- Next time, I will make this with two different fabrics to be reversible so that I don't have to stitch all the way around and all I have to bind will be just armholes.

- I had concerns of this pattern whether it would fit well because there was no darts at all. However, the shape was very nice when I wear. Overall, the pattern is well designed.

The wrap dress I made with this pattern is shown here.

Sushi Chef Suit or Karate Suit I Made!

My sister went to Sushi School and now she can make Sushi! The ordinary Sushi Chef Costume at store is very boring to me so I did sew her a nicer one!
McCall's 8846

She was asked to make Sushi at my friend's party in front of guests next week. I am hoping this suit adds some lively atmosphere to the party.

I used cotton border fabrics with the vintage McCall's 8846 pattern printed in 1967. Here is the pattern. The pattern is for beach wears named "Karate Suit". You can use this pattern to make a pajama suit or relaxing wears at home. No zippers or button holes.

I altered as follow:

- Instead of using the belt, I added ties outside.

- The way of wrapping is changed into opposite as the original direction was only for dead people in Japan!

- Hand stitched on the hems so that the suit looked soft and feminine.

The snood looks like above photo.

Hope you like this!

Vintage Sewing Pattern: McCall's 8846 Karate Suit

I made Sushi Chef Costume - Sushi Chef Coat, Long Pants and Snood - for my sister using this vintage pattern printed in 1967. The patterns are for Karate Suit, Snood, Slippers, and Beach Mat, all for beach.

Pattern Review of this Vintage Pattern

- Easy to make but snood section of paper direction was not well written and was hard to understand.

- I used tapes instead of making strings.

- I changed the way of front body wrapping as the it is wrong for Japanese. The wrap should be seen as "Y" or it is for only dead people in coffins for funerals in Japan!

- I made the belt but it didn't look right when I tried so I placed tapes outside as well to tie. That looked a lot better.

- Probably because the pattern is published in 1967, the required fabrics only include 36" and 45" wide materials not mentioning wider ones.

- I think this suit is good for elderly or people who need support as it is easy to wear or to be changed by others. Pants have no zipper but elastic.

The one I made for my sister as "Sushi Chef Suit" using this pattern is here!

Winnie the Pooh: Piglet (English&Japanese)

I made Piglet, the fourth year in a row of making Winnie the Pooh and his friends, for my niece's birthday gift! I used a vintage MacCall's pattern in 1960s. Piglet seems like the original one in the book of Milne rather than Disney's. I prefer the original ones anyway!

Finished size is approximately 25cm(10 inch) height to the tip of the ears and 27cm(11 inch) width to hands. It's quite smaller than Pooh as expected!

It was very easy to make. I didn't use the suggested fabric but instead used micro fiber, slightly pinky one for the body, thinking that would fit into Pigret, a little pig. Others I had seen at shops were bright pink which might be similar to the one by Disney but I don't like strong colors for staffed animals for kids.

The back head has two darts. The rompers have a dart in front and 4 tacks in the back.

I also altered the following:

- cotton velvet fabric for the inside of ears instead of the same material;

- cotton knit fabric for the rompers;

- instead of making fringes on the scarf, I cut 2 fabrics and sewed around them to turn out as my material was not suitable to make the fringe.

This Piglet doesn't have the eyebrows as seen in the original book of Milne. Disney changed the face with eyebrows. I guess they added to raise the eyebrows to show face expressions in the animation!

Hope you like my Piglet! I will sew Kanga and Roo next year. Then I will finish al of five, or six if Roo is counted separately, in the vintage McCall's 8087 envelope! In the mean time, please take a look of Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore I made.

Vintage Sewing Pattern: Advance 6931

This vintage sewing pattern is one of my collections. It was printed probably in 1950s by Advance Company which no longer exists.

I made a cute pajama bag using this pattern for my niece, modifying the cat's belly to be able to open with a zipper.

My handmade pajama bag is here.

Kimono and Obi Shopping in Tokyo: From Japan with Love

Vintage Kimono and Obi (belt) are the best things to buy in Japan. Kimono Underwear which is same shape with Kimono without lining is a lot cheaper and good for a robe. Obi can be displayed on your wall or table. You might not know the price range and how to choose so I will share some ideas for your shopping.

  1. Recently I went to Obi hunting with my sister. She came back from abroad and wanted to buy Obi to take back. There are many used Kimono shops in Tokyo. The price range varies but it starts as low as 1000 yen, or $12. If you cannot find that price in the shop, the target clients must be people actually wear Kimono so that the products are in super good condition to wear.
  2. Obi less than 1000 yen is a junk usually but if you want to cut it in pieces for recycling or upcycling, go for it. The length of Obi is 13 feet, and is silk! You can make something like bags or placement mats using a part. There are some Obi not made out of 100% silk so ask about the material to the shop owner.
  3. The shop we went is located in Nippori which is Tokyo's fabric town. In front of the famous Tomato , the largest fabric shop in the town, there are 2-3 used Kimono shops. I may write about Nippori in this blog in future. (I wrote! Please see the link at the bottom.)
  4. Some may have creases because the interfacing got shrunk in the long time. You can iron it over a cloth with low temperature with no steam but I can't fully guarantee the result as the inside of Obi, interfacing, may not stretch anymore.
  5. I recommend buy Fukuro Obi, not Nagoya Obi. Nagoya Obi is not flat shaped, sewn in the middle in order to wear it easier so it cannot be flatten on your wall or table.
  6. We budgeted 1000 yen to 3500 yen, $12 - $40, approximately. Oh, I just found a good English tutorial page of how to display Obi. Here is the page. One of their pictures is this. Beautiful!
Our result of Obi hunting is here.

My favorite is the middle one, midnight blue base with silver and gold flowers. I am always amazed by the free spirits and a great sense of design of our ancestors.

This Obi was 1000 yen or $12. Gold cranes facing each other, probably worn by a wedding guest as cranes are thought to live 1000 years thus good fortune is indicated. It would be gorgeous to hang on a wall.
